Optimal
The typeface ‘Optimal’ was created as a reaction to a comment by the designer Karl Gerstner about ‘Optima’, a font by Hermann Zapf (Darmstadt): ‘What bothers me about it (the typeface Optima), is that all the straight lines are curved’. This comment was implemented as a concrete instruction and all straight lines straightened out. ‘Optimal’ was born. These and other works were created in a joint summer semester project with students from the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland in Basel (were Karl Gerstner came from).
